Auburn was named after a Yorkshire town cited in Oliver Goldsmith’s poem, “Deserted Village.”


On Owasco Lake, Auburn is home to Cayuga Community College and Auburn Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison. Major local funders include the Fred L. Emerson Foundation, established by the former president of the Dunn and McCarthy shoe company, and the Allyn Foundation of Skaneateles.
